Most people don’t know that their air conditioning system has a condensate line or drain hose to allow the condensation to drip off and safely leave the system. Essentially, the condensate line is a tube that moves water from the air handler to a drain or place outdoors, depending on the way your system is configured. Sometimes, your system will do something weird like turn on and off rapidly or simply not cool properly as the only sign that your condensation line needs cleaning or attention.

Why Is There A Condensate Line?

In a modern HVAC system, the air from your cold air return is pulled across a special coil that gets really cold when the gases inside are compressed. As that warm air passes over the coil and is cooled, it the liquid it was carrying as vapour, which is them collected in a condensate pan underneath the coil. The condensation then goes out down a tube from the pan into a drain or outside into the ground.

It’s a fairly simple system, but if the tube gets clogged you can be in real trouble.

When the condensation line is blocked, this process is disrupted. Some air handlers are designed to essentially stop working until the standing water is removed from the pan, others will simply spill everything onto the floor or into a wall, which can lead to water damage and even damage to your system. This is why it’s usually recommended that you flush that condensation line every time you change your HVAC air filter.

If you suspect a clogged condensation line, flushing it with straight vinegar or a diluted vinegar/ hot water mix can get the water out of the condensate pan. If you aren’t certain how to do this yourself give us a call at Novel Care. We’re always happy to help: 416-921-0000

The short answer is… air conditioning. Without ductwork of course. The trick isn’t in understanding what is ductless, but whether or not if it’s right for you home or business. Take a look below and see why ductless is perfect for a city like Toronto and the GTA.

What Is Ductless: Efficient Air Conditioning

Unlike central air or window units, ductless air conditioning offers a solid option for older homes and buildings. Not only are they powerful enough to cool a specific area, but they can do it efficiently to avoid a drastic spike in energy bills during those hot and humid months.

The reason why ductless are more efficient than central or window units is due to their design. Since they are installed into a wall with very small holes to connect to the condenser, the chance for air leakage is very low. Plus, central air tends to actually waste energy due to the fact that cooler air is lost as it travels through ductwork in the house or building. Ductless is more direct. It takes air in, and disperses it to the area it resides in.

What Is Ductless: Reliable Options

Just like any appliance, there are a few quality manufacturers out there to choose from that you might recognize. LG, Mitsubishi, and Panasonic are some of the bigger names you may have heard of, but don’t forget about Daiken, Fujitsu and American Standard ductless air conditioners. Each of these brands has the experience and quality that homeowners and business owners alike have come to trust over the years. Just remember to have a professional install yours if you decide ductless is for you.

Professional Installation Matters

You should be able to answer the question “What is ductless?”, but that doesn’t mean installing it in your home is a weekend DIY project – unless you have professional experience.

At Novel Care, rest assured you’re getting a team with the experience to get the job done right the first time. Our team has served Toronto and the GTA for more than 30 years now, and our customers can always count on us. Day or night, we’re available 24/7 by phone in the event of an emergency to deal with any HVAC issues.

So now that you can answer “What is ductless?” why not let our professionals provide you with a free assessment to see if ductless is right for you. Just give us a call at 416-921-0000, and we’d be more than happy to help you beat the heat this season.

Just like a television, microwave, or any other appliance in your home, there are plenty of companies who make the same product. When it comes time to start searching for ductless air conditioner brands, have a look below for a better look at some of the available manufacturers on the market today.

Mitsubishi Electric may be most known for its vehicles, but they know a thing or two about cooling your home as well. With plenty of stylish options to go over, rest assured Mitsubishi can deliver a quality ductless unit that will save you money on your monthly energy bill while also being an environmentally wise choice.

As the days get longer, you’ll start to feel the temperature climb too. In Toronto and the GTA, almost everyone has air conditioning to battle the rising heat of the summer months, but which type is right for you? Thankfully there are only two choices, but choosing between ductless and central could have a lot to do with your living situation and budget.

Ductless Costs Less Than Central Air Conditioning

It really does depend on your home, but ductless is less invasive to install, making it more cost-effective. For example, central air conditioning is great for cooling off a home but only if you have the necessary vents/ducts in place. Central takes cold air from the main unit and pushes it through the vents of a home to spread the cool air to all rooms evenly. This is great if your home is equipped with the necessary ductwork. If it isn’t, you can imagine how expensive it might get to have your home fitted with the required vents and ducts.

Ductless on the other hand is a great alternative to central air conditioning. A ductless unit can be installed to cool a given area of your home. Most often, this option is installed in a large common area of the home like a living room or family room for maximum effectiveness.

How Ductless Air Conditioning Works

Designed to work best for spot cooling, ductless air conditioning can be a single subtle unit installed to help you beat the heat. It draws in air from outside, runs it through the unit for cooling, and redistributes the air to the given room via a small fan. It doesn’t require too much work to install, which is great for those looking to cool off without breaking the bank. Also, the subtle design of ductless air conditioning means it won’t clash with the room’s décor.

Naturally, you can choose to have more than one ductless air conditioning unit in a bigger home, but this is something a professional can recommend after seeing your residence.

Novel Care Is Toronto’s Choice For Ductless Air Conditioning

Andrew and Cheryl own a small semi-detached home in the west end of Toronto. It’s an older home that has a nice new boiler and radiator system to keep it well heated throughout the winter. We know because we installed the boiler, but that’s another story. This time around they needed to get their ductless air conditioner ready for the spring.

In the fall when they last used it, their ductless air conditioner had a squeaking noise and wasn’t blowing as cold as they were used to. At the time it wasn’t a big deal because they were shutting it down for the year, but with spring on the horizon they knew they’d be using it soon enough.

Andrew and Cheryl called us, Novel Care, a week ago to come and take a look at their ductless air conditioner well in advance of spring. They wanted to make sure it was ready to go when the warm weather arrived. They also had the money saved up and ready to spend in case they needed to replace it, which they didn’t. Luckily, they called us before allowing it to operate through a small issue. We won’t bore you with the details, but the repairs were fairly simple.

We were in and out of their home in a few hours at very little cost to them. Their ductless air conditioner is now ready to run all spring, summer and fall to keep their home cool and refreshing.  If they had allowed their ductless air conditioner to work all summer long without being serviced they would certainly have run into bigger problems that would take longer to fix and certainly be more expensive. Their foresight worked in their favour and we’re happy they called us early.

In the spring and summer we field so many emergency ductless air conditioner repair calls because people have neglected a small repair or annual maintenance. With these issues being so avoidable, we wish more people were as diligent as Andrew and Cheryl.

For more information about ductless air conditioner maintenance or to book a ductless air conditioner repair or maintenance appointment contact us today at 416-921-0000.

Owning a home in Toronto and the GTA isn’t an easy achievement. You should be proud, but most homeowners are actually a bit overwhelmed with their new responsibilities. From managing property taxes to ensuring your home is energy-efficient, there is plenty to do if you want to protect your investment. When things breakdown, it’s important to know who to call, like in the event you need home air conditioning repair in Toronto.

Finding The Right Home Air Conditioning Repair In Toronto

While it might be easy to lookup “best home air conditioning repair in Toronto”, that doesn’t always produce the best outcome. Often times you might end up with someone who doesn’t fully know what they’re doing, unfamiliar with all the various makes and models, or doesn’t serve your particular area of Toronto and the GTA. It can be quite frustrating to put your home’s repairs in the hands of a stranger, which is why it’s important to weigh your options.

The right home air conditioning repair in Toronto doesn’t always mean the cheapest option available. In fact, there isn’t really a set price since every home is different. A qualified professional would only make recommendations after properly assessing your home to see what the nature of the issue is. And installation is also based on the home itself. Sure you want an efficient model, but the square footage of your home, whether or not you have the correct duct system in place, and the insulation of your home are all crucial factors before selecting a model of home air conditioner.

Take the time to go over a couple of options instead of just hiring the first one you come across. You’ll have plenty to choose from when it comes to home air conditioning repair in Toronto, but the one you choose should have these 5 basics, including:

  • Serves Toronto and the GTA
  • Has more than 10-15 years’ experience
  • Is available in the event of an emergency
  • Is knowledgeable and able to answer your questions
  • Has good reviews online or testimonials/case studies

The summer in Toronto and the GTA is no joke. Each year, heat warnings encourage us to trade fun in the sun for the comfort of the great indoors. This is only a relief if your A/C is working though. Without it, your home could feel like a sauna – which is what got our previous client Abby to give us a call last summer. Rather than look through countless cooling contractors in Toronto, she remembered we’re available 24/7, and promptly contacted us when her A/C went out on an especially hot summer afternoon.

Cooling Contractors In Toronto Who Always Answer Your Call

The temperature had risen well into the 30s – not counting the humidex – when we got Abby’s call. She explained that she was hosting a birthday for her 8-year-old son when the rain forced their backyard BBQ indoors. The power didn’t go out, but their air conditioner did. Unsure what was the issue, she called Novel Care.

After a few minutes, our operator informed Abby there was actually a technician nearby who could take a look. She just had this unit installed before the summer began and was certainly well within her warranty, so we were surprised to hear something had gone wrong. Our technician arrived within the hour and took a look at the unit – everything’s fine. No weird sounds, but no cool air either. The answer seemed almost too obvious at this point. Our man popped upstairs and gave a bit of a chuckle as he opened the vents in the living room, kitchen, and dining room. Naturally, someone at this birthday party had a sense of humour and closed up all the vents.

Now you might be thinking, why we didn’t ask this upfront when Abby first called, well, we’re not sure if you’ve ever hosted a birthday party for a dozen 8 year olds, but it’s not easy. Abby sounded pretty stressed out on the phone and the noise in the background was pretty clear that these little ones weren’t happy. Rather than ask her the basic questions we normally would, it was easier to dispatch our expert to check out the problem. At Novel Care, we believe that when it comes to cooling contractors in Toronto, customer service makes all the difference. It paid off for Abby, and our expert even scored a piece of ice cream cake for his troubles.

There’s no denying that the city of Toronto and the GTA can get humid and uncomfortable when the summer months come by. Our client Harpreet can attest to that. With a new dog under a year old and a baby on the way, his central air conditioning gave out just as the temperature began to climb. Harpreet eventually found us after a tedious search for heating and air conditioning in Toronto. We were glad to help in a hurry.

When Heating and Air Conditioning in Toronto Can’t Wait

Imagine the mercury rising, so you turn on your air conditioner. Only trouble is that it’s not quite as cool as you’d like. You tinker with the thermostat but nothing is working. Something is wrong. Add in the pup running around and a pregnant wife, and you can understand just how stressed out Harpreet was when he began his search for heating and air conditioning in Toronto. Thankfully, he found us soon after.

Once he explained the issue, we were able to dispatch someone to his home fairly quick. Our expert worked with Harpreet to explain what the issues were, and what kind of budget he had to work with. Thankfully, his budget wasn’t too strict since the unit was better off being replaced than repaired. We explained that there was a warranty in place with the new model, and Harpreet should feel comfortable giving us a call should anything go wrong.

Our expert recommended a central air conditioning unit that made sense for the size of the home. We were even able to schedule the installation a day later to ensure it was up and running when the heat kicked in that week. Harpreet followed up with us to say thank you and that his ac was running great. Oh, and his new baby girl was safe from the sticky summer temperatures.

Before setting out to spend your money, it’s important to know a bit more about ductless HVAC systems. Weighing the pros and the cons is always a good idea when it comes to investing in your home. After all, Toronto and the GTA is a big place, and upgrades for your home can get expensive quick if you don’t ask the right questions. Take a look below for a quick rundown of what you need to know.

What Does Your Home Need?

To start, you’ll want to identify what type of ductwork your home has in place. If the answer is none, then ductless HVAC systems make more sense.
These systems are made up of an outdoor condenser, indoor unit, and tubing that connect the two. The outdoor component brings in the air, while the indoor unit cools it to your desired temperature. It should be noted that this is a known way to save some money on your next energy bill too! Central air units tend to lose as much as 30% of their efficiency while traveling through ductwork, so ductless is beneficial in the long run.

When It Comes To Ductless HVAC Systems, Start With The Best

Any time you’re doing research, it’s easy to start with the best brands for home upgrades. This case is no different. Here are just some of the bigger, more reliable companies that make ductless HVAC systems you can count on.

It should be noted that while ductless might be ideal for your home, you should consult with a professional installer to see how many units you might need. You see, these ductless air conditioning systems are designed for spot cooling specifically. That means if your home is on the larger side, you’ll need more than just one unit to cool the entire residence. Plus it’s always a good idea to go with a pro when making upgrades, rather than looking for just the cheapest option available.

Installers Serving Toronto And The GTA

In the spirit of getting things done right the first time, going with the cheapest self-proclaimed professional isn’t recommended here. The right pro will have the experience to make recommendations based on your budget and needs.

At Novel Care, we have been doing exactly that for more than 30 years. Our dedicated team of HVAC experts are more than capable of handling all of Toronto and the GTA’s installation and maintenance needs. We even make ourselves available 24/7, should any emergency repairs be needed in the middle of the night. Contact us at 416-921-0000 to learn more. We’d be more than happy to answer your questions and help you get started on navigating through all the available ductless HVAC systems, and narrowing down which works best for you.

Before the weather changes from ice-cold to sweltering hot, you might want to consider being prepared. Just like you’ve come to rely on your furnace or boiler in the winter to keep you warm, your air conditioner can really save you from sticking to the furniture on those muggy days. This is why some companies offer an air conditioner protection plan for residential cooling systems.

Why Do I Need A Protection Plan?

If you’re wondering this, chances are you’ve been very lucky. Consider this. It’s a hot, humid day and you’re parents are visiting from out-of-town. Sure, you could show them around the city. After all, Toronto and the GTA is a big enough place with plenty to offer, but they’ve had a long trip and just want to relax indoors. When it’s too hot to go outside, just imagine if your air conditioner decides to stop working. In the middle of a heat wave, this could prove to be downright dangerous for your parents who certainly didn’t travel all this way just to wipe sweat from their heads every few seconds. An Air Conditioner Protection Plan could help though.

What Is An Air Conditioner Protection Plan?

The simplest way to explain this is to say it’s a way to ensure your peace of mind, all year-long. Basically, if your air conditioner decides to break down, someone will be available to make repairs and help you without charging you for labour or parts! When you buy into a protection plan, you’ll be covered for however long you agree to. That’s why we offer Air Conditioner Protection Plans to every one of our customers!

What Exactly Does Novel Care Cover?

  • Repairs, part replacement, labour
  • Includes free annual check-up

After 30 years of installing and maintaining HVAC for our customers across Toronto and the GTA, we know a thing or two about making the repairs you need, fast. Whether your thermostat isn’t working or there’s a problem with the compressor, we can be there to handle the problem and you won’t pay for any parts or labour. In fact, you can click here for a complete list of items our Air Conditioner Protection Plan covers. And you’ll never have to worry about being covered in the future. We’ll automatically renew your Air Conditioner Protection Plan every year, unless you’d prefer not to have this payment in place.

Additionally, if a part is unavailable or has been discontinued for your model of air conditioner, we will gladly refund any money collected for the Air Conditioner Protection Plan, as long as no other service calls have been fulfilled during your agreement.

Still have a few questions? Novel Care also offers a boiler protection plan and furnace protection plan. Feel free to contact us at 416-921-0000! We’d love to hear from you and help ensure your home stays cool under the heat of summer.

Wouldn’t it be nice if all of our appliances lasted forever and worked perfectly all the time. We would save so much money and time fixing them. Unfortunately, this will never happen as all appliances are machines. Over time all machines break down, it’s that simple. Air conditioners are no different, which is why from time to time we experience air conditioner problems. Fortunately, some of our air conditioner problems are easy to understand, identify and even fix.

5 Common Air Conditioner Problems

  1. Cleanliness: It’s been a long time since you cleaned your air conditioner and now something is wrong with it. Air conditioning units needs to be cleaned fairly regularly, especially since they sit outside and are privy to all nature has to throw at them. Filters should be replaced regularly, evaporator and condenser coils should be cleaned at least once a year, and wiping down your air conditioner components is also helpful to maintain efficiency.
  2. Leaking Refrigerant: Refrigerant is the fluid inside your air conditioner that keeps things cold. If you find that you’re constantly adjusting the temperature slightly colder, there’s a good chance you have a leak. Refrigerant isn’t the safest liquid on the planet, so it’s probably best to call a professional HVAC technician from a company like Novel Care to take care of fixing it.
  3. Poor Drainage: Drainage issues are quite often the result of loose pipe connections or clogs. These clogs can result in water backing up into your unit and your house, which can cause expensive water damage if it’s not noticed quickly.
  4. Worn Out Controls or Sensors: Just like other electronics that get used all the time, these components can wear out and need replacing. Corrosion at terminals and on wires can cause issues for your system, so be sure to point out anything you see during service calls.
  5. Flipping A Switch: Lots of air conditioners have an option where the unit is connected to and indoor wall switch, for safety and ease of use. As the homeowner you know what that switch does, but not all of the visitors to your home know. This switch could have been accidentally flipped and turned your unit off.

Take a look at these things when you notice any air conditioner problems. For more information or to schedule a service appointment contact Novel Care today: 416-921-0000.

It’s not common knowledge, but only 17% of homes in the world have air conditioning. Fortunately this statistic is going to change, soon, and very drastically. By the end of the century, within the next 84 years, the number of homes that have air conditioning will rise to about 70%. This isn’t anticipating any radial factors, but based on the growing demand of the global middle class population. The main way this will be achieved is through technology and the thought that merely cooling an individual’s personal space is much more affordable than an entire building. Consider things like office chairs that provide cooling, or shoes that keep individuals cool as they walk.

Technological Advances In Air Conditioning

It’s difficult to predict exactly, but the amount of energy that even the most efficient air conditioner models consume is a lot for some countries to digest. The United States Government is known for a lot of things, but the DELTA program isn’t one of their more popular ones. DELTA stands for Delivering Efficient Local Thermal Amenities.

For example, they’ve developed a prototype in RoCo, the robotic personal conditioning device. RoCo has a heater and air conditioner attached to a moving base that follows you around through the a signal on your smart phone. RoCo will gently blow warm or cool air at your to help regulate your temperature. In a commercial building, up to 30 percent of energy costs could be saved, especially if RoCo is charged using solar technology.

DELTA has also come up with a wireless powered climate-controlled office chair. It uses only 14 watts to providing heating for its user and 4 watts for cooling. It has cooling and heating elements that are assisted by small fans, and when not in use the whole system powers down to save energy.

One of the most impressive technologies are the thermoregulation of shoes. DELTA calls this the ReBoot, which have thin insoles with water channels running through them. Working like an air conditioner the water absorbs the heat from your feet and disperses it through a small fan in the boot. This works because the feet are part of the body’s cooling system and give off a lot of heat. By making them more efficient the body will cool off faster.

These technologies aren’t currently available on the market, so while we all wait for our own personal cooling accessories we’ll continue to rely on high-efficiency central and ductless air conditioning systems.

Annual air conditioner maintenance is one of the most important things you can do to ensure your air conditioner is running properly and efficiently. Proper air conditioner maintenance is also one of the best ways to keep your air conditioner running longer, so replacement units are fewer and farther between. It’s a big mistake to forgo air conditioner maintenance, and here are 7 other mistakes you might be making when it comes to home cooling.

Air Conditioner Filters – Part of air conditioner maintenance is changing the filter, but it shouldn’t end there. The air conditioner and HVAC filter should be inspected and possibly changed at least once a month. Changing the air filter is easy and can improve the efficiency of your system immediately.

Programmable Thermostats – A programmable thermostat is one of the best ways to ensure your system is running as efficiently as possible. This reduces the wear and tear on your system and also ensures that you’re not paying high rates on your energy bill when you don’t need to. Smart thermostats make programming even easier as they understand your habits and adjust the temperature accordingly.

Incorrectly Setting A Thermostat – The human body can adapt to changing temperatures quite easily. If you’re setting your thermostat too low during the summer to keep your home and body temperature very low you might be wasting money. Every degree setting lower in the summer can increase your energy bill by up to 3%. Allow your body to adjust to higher temperatures so you can save money in the summer.

Fans – Ceiling fans are a great addition to air conditioning systems. They help circulate air throughout your home, so your air conditioner doesn’t have to work as hard. Ensure that your fan is turning counterclockwise during the summer to assist with airflow.

Poorly Positioned Vents – It’s tough to choose where your vents are located in your home, but it’s important that they aren’t blocked by furniture or curtains. Obstructed vents aren’t able to properly cool your home or circulate the air. This makes your system work harder than it has to, which in turn costs you money.

Empty Rooms – It’s not always the best idea to close vents in your house as it affects the pressure of your home, but if you can put dampers on the pipes leading to empty rooms in your home and close them when they’re not in use you won’t be cooling empty rooms. When doing this it’s important to close the doors to those rooms so cold air is sucked into them.

Window Coverings – Sunlight is wonderful, but it’s also the biggest thing fighting your air conditioner. By coming through the windows and heating the air in your home, sunlight can be making your system work harder to keep your home cool. shades and blinds are the best defense against the sun when it’s shining through your windows.

When it comes to the efficiency of your home, your cooling and heating systems account for a lot of your energy bill. If you’re not sure if your system is running correctly you might be tempted to call an HVAC technician for air conditioning repair services. Ultimately, it’s the best way to get your system working properly, but first it’s important to find out if your system needs attention.

You may notice that your air conditioner isn’t cooling your home as quickly as it used to. You’ve put your hand over the vent or register and it’s hard to tell if the air is warmer than it was a month ago, or even last summer. One simple way to test if your air conditioner is running properly is to use a thermometer.

Use A Thermometer, Then Call For Air Conditioning Repair

The easiest way to find out if your air conditioner needs a tune up or air conditioning repair services is with this easy test. Turn on your air conditioner and leave it running for at least 15 minutes. Ensure that the temperature outside is above 80 degrees F, and that the air filter is clean. Next place a thermometer on the register that’s closest to the indoor cooling equipment and leave it there for at least 5 minutes. Next do the same on the return of intake vent that sucks air from your home to be cooled. The air that’s coming out of the furnace should be 15 – 20 degrees F cooler than the air that’s being sucked in. If the air that’s coming out is less than 15 degree F cooler than there might be a problem with your air conditioner.

Issues could range between low refrigerant, leaking refrigerant, a blockage, poor air circulation, and more.

Overall, this is a good way to tell if your air conditioner is operating as efficiently as possible. Low efficiency could mean you need air conditioning repair or maintenance services.
