A red tag in the HVAC industry is basically a product warning. This means that the product you have installed in your home or business is no longer safe to operate and needs to be repaired or replaced immediately. These tags are typically placed on gas appliances by licensed technicians and at times that same technician may be required by law to turn off or disable the HVAC appliance in question.

Is There More Than 1 Type Of Red Tag?

There are two types of red tags that you should know about. “A” red tags are placed on appliances that pose an immediate threat to the safety of the building and the people in the immediate area. “B” red tags are an indication of unsafe conditions. A “B” red tag provides a specified period of time to have the equipment repaired or replaced. If corrective action isn’t taken within a specific timeline, your natural gas will be turned off by the local utility. Whether you have an “A” or “B” red tag it’s important to quickly resolve the issues. The fastest way to have them fixed is to give us a call at 416-921-0000

Why Do I Have A Red Tag?

Red Tags are placed on the appliances or piping systems in your home or building that use natural gas. It takes a licensed HVAC gas technician to identify a hazardous situation in order for a Red Tag to be issued.

One common example of the need to issue a Red Tag is if an appliance is releasing carbon monoxide into the air. Carbon monoxide is a dangerous gas that has no colour, taste or small. It has the ability to cause serious health problems and even death if it goes undetected.

What Do I Do When I Receive A Red Tag?

The best thing you can do is call Novel Care: 416-921-0000. Our HVAC technicians have the knowledge and experience necessary to properly and safely evaluate the situation and provide you with a resolution. That also means that you get a free estimate for the work that’s needed in order to resolve the problem. Whether that means expert HVAC repairs or the replacement of equipment you can count on Novel Care.

With the days getting shorter and the temperature slowly starting to inch closer and closer to that freezing mark, you’ll want to take care of a few things around the house before winter arrives. While most people have a checklist in mind for the spring and fall months, there isn’t a specific date you need to worry about. Just make sure you follow these straightforward fall and winter HVAC tips to get the most out of your furnace and air conditioner.

What You Need To Know About Fall And Winter HVAC Tips

When it comes to getting the most out of your HVAC systems, maintenance is key. Start with the basics and switch out your air filters. This should be done every few months to help make sure that your systems are receiving enough airflow. The better the airflow, the better the performance. Plus, a well-kept air filter means the air in your home is a bit cleaner too, which is good for your overall health – especially if you have allergies.

Another common fall and winter HVAC tip to follow should be to book regular maintenance checkups for both your heating and cooling system. It might seem odd to call a professional to look at your air conditioner at the end of a hot summer, but it’s always good practice to make sure there are no surprises next summer. And before you flip on that furnace, it doesn’t hurt to book some maintenance either. Imagine if you left your car in the garage all summer and then started it up in the winter to go for a ride. Avoid any surprises by having a professional sign off on things if you can.

Last but not least, you should make sure your thermostat is working properly. While it is recommended to have a smart thermostat, it’s not always in the budget. However, most thermostats allow you to program the temperature. Make sure it’s not working too hard by keeping things cooler during the day while you’re at work or out of the house. You can set the thermostat to warm your home closer to the time when you’ll be there the most. This saves your furnace from overworking and keeps energy costs a bit lower.

Looking for performance and energy savings in your commercial HVAC system? Schedule an HVAC Coil Cleaning appointment today and notice the benefits of clean coils versus dirty coils right away.

It should be known that HVAC maintenance at the commercial and residential levels is absolutely important. If anyone tells you otherwise they don’t know what they’re talking about. Proper HVAC maintenance is the best way to ensure that your system operates as efficiently as possible for as long as possible. Deterioration of the part and the efficiency of an HVAC system will happen over time no matter what you do, but maintenance can drastically reduce how much and how fast that happens. One very important part of HVAC maintenance is HVAC Coil Cleaning.

The difference in terms of performance between an HVAC system with clean coils versus one with dirty is incredible to say the least. Dirty HVAC coils prevent your system from operating at peak efficiency, which means it needs to use more energy to operate. As a result of using more energy, your HVAC system is costing you more on a monthly basis on your energy bills. That’s just one main reason why HVAC Coil Cleaning is so important.

On top of efficiency, HVAC Coil Cleaning is important for health reasons. Dirty HVAC coils can affect how well your system control humidity, they can breed bacteria, they can impede air flow throughout your building, and as mentioned they can drastically affect your monthly expenses. While we’re discussing how much dirty coils affect costs, it’s important to know that dirty HVAC coils can also lead to more breakdowns and the needs for replacement parts. They can also lead to the need to prematurely replace your entire HVAC system, or at the least parts of it.

Statistically speaking, dirty coils can consume up to 37% more energy than clean ones. They can also be a major factor in losing up to 30% of your heating and cooling capacity.

Booking an HVAC Coil Cleaning with a professional HVAC technician like those at Novel Care Toronto will address all of these problems. They will remove the dirt and dust from your unit without damaging the coils or any of the associated part. Professional HVAC Coil Cleaning will lead to better airflow, higher efficiency, improved indoor air quality, lower expenses, and with a company like Novel Care Toronto 100% satisfaction, guaranteed.

Most people forget that winter lasts until March in Toronto and the GTA. So no matter how mild of a winter you’ve had, there’s always time for the cold to roll in and change everything. When the mercury dips below zero, your boiler or furnace keep you warm, but what if they didn’t? It’s good to know who to call when things go wrong. Emergency HVAC services make all the difference.

There When You Need Us

Whether it’s the middle of the night or the beginning of the work day, Novel Care is there to help with emergency HVAC services. Our experts understand that furnaces and boilers rarely break down at a convenient time, so we’re ready to answer the call when you need heat. We’ll work with you to assess the situation and dispatch a professional to address any issues, no matter how late into the night you call.

Older Homes Are At Greater Risk In The Winter

Toronto and the GTA has no shortage of new condos being built, but it also has plenty of homes available too. While the newer ones might be built with energy efficiency in mind, older homes weren’t. Consider how much energy it takes to heat a home with an unfinished basement or poorly insulated attic. These homes aren’t held to the same standard, and that can cost you in two ways.

The first is that it can increase your energy bill. With your home not being able to properly store the heat, your furnace or boiler work a bit harder on those cold winter days. This brings us to our second expense; the need for repairs when things break down. Even if your furnace isn’t very old, freezing temperatures outside means you need more heat insider. Combined with a poorly insulated home, your furnace or boiler could be working overtime to keep you warm. That’s when things break. And that can leave you stranded at home in the middle of a cold winter night.

Take Better Care Of Your Furnace Or Boiler

  • Schedule a professional for maintenance
  • Keep an eye on that thermostat

Most homeowners are not professionals when it comes to boiler or furnace maintenance, and that’s okay! It is recommended you have a professional take a look once in a while though to see how your home is doing. The right professional can identify things before they break down and even make suggestions to catch problems before they happen.

The other simple and cost-effective way to save your furnace or boiler from the harsh winter months is to manage your thermostat. Turning it up a couple of degrees can save you from overdoing it when it’s cold out. Also, it never hurts to try your best to keep any vulnerable pipes properly insulated either to avoid frozen pipes. Additionally, you can ward off frozen pipes by keeping a small stream of water running on those especially frigid days, but that’s not very cost-effective.

Professional Emergency HVAC Services

Toronto and the GTA has plenty of self-proclaimed professionals available to offer their services for a cost. Trouble is, that cost may be more than a hit to your wallet. Hiring the wrong person to work on your furnace or boiler isn’t worth the hassle.

Good thing Novel Care is a name you can trust. Our HVAC experience spans over the last 30 years and that makes us a great choice for emergency HVAC services. We always strive to offer the help you deserve, right from the time we first answer your call. So remember, if winter strikes your furnace or boiler, contact us at 416-921-0000 for a real professional experience. We’ll even throw in a 22-point inspection of your furnace or boiler to stay ahead of any future problems you might encounter. This is all part of our way of taking care of our customers, all winter long.

Your furnace is an important part of ensuring your home remains a comfortable and healthy environment. Furnace filters may not seem like a big part of that equation due to their simplicity, but in fact they are. One of the easiest ways to avoid problems with your furnace is to ensure that you change your furnace filter regularly.

An Overview of Furnace Filters

Every furnace has a filter, and if one doesn’t then it has some sort of other filtering system for the air that passes through it. Furnace filters ensure that dust, hair, and other airborne particles that are sucked in by your HVAC systems intake aren’t redistributed throughout your home via the vents. All air that gets sucked into your HVAC system passes through the furnace filter prior to being heated or cooled and sent back out into your home or office.

Types of Furnace Filters

There are three common types of furnace filters available and used in different furnace models. There are the cheap fibreglass furnace filters, pleated furnace filters, and reusable furnace filters. Each type of filter has its own pros and cons that can help homeowners decide which type is best for their purposes.

Fibreglass Furnace Filters

Fibreglass furnace filters are the cheapest filters on the market. They’re disposable and as a result typically need replacing more often than any other type of filter. At Novel Care we recommend replacing these types of furnace filters at least every 90 days or when you notice that they’re clogged and affecting the efficiency of your HVAC system. Fibreglass filters come in a variety of different sizes that can suit just about any furnace, but also have a lower filter rating.

Pleated Furnace Filters

These are the most common types of filters. They vary in price from between $12 to $50 depending on their size and quality. Pleated furnace filters are typically made from paper and polyester and should also be changed about every 90 days but can be left longer if the air quality isn’t bad or they aren’t clogged with dust. If you’re looking for a balance between cost and good quality air filtering these are the best option.

Reusable Furnace Filters

These are more expensive than fibreglass or pleated furnace filters and can last for many years with proper care and cleaning. They’re typically made from plastic and aluminum, and the filter itself can be washed and vacuumed when it’s time for cleaning. While these are the most expensive options they come in a wide range of prices depending on the filter ratings, but they’re generally accepted as the best filters on the market.

Understanding Filter Ratings

Furnace filters are rated on the MERV (Minimum Efficiency Reporting Value) scale. This scale ranges between 1 and 16 with 16 being the best rating possible.  Most filters that you would want in your home are rated between 8 and 11. If you have someone with respiratory issues or allergies then finding a filter with a rating higher than 11 or 12 is ideal. Filters with high ratings are also useful if someone in your home smokes as they are better at filtering the air of smoke and related smells.

You might be thinking that it makes sense to only purchase filters that are rated 16 because they’ll provide the best indoor air quality, which is true but the might the MERV rating the slower air passes through the filter. The downside to impeding the flow of air is that it can directly affect the efficiency of your HVAC system and slightly increase your energy bills. This is because your HVAC appliances have to work harder to force air through the filters and spread it throughout your home.

Overall, furnace filters are an important part of your HVAC system and ensuring that the indoor air quality of your home is at its best. Regardless of the filter that you choose it will eventually need to be replaced, so taking a look once a month to see if it needs cleaning or replacing is ideal. Regularly changing your furnace filter also ensure that the efficiency of your system isn’t compromised by a clogged filter.

Summer is officially here! You’ve got your lawnmower primed to groom a nice lawn, your gardens are coming together nicely with beautiful flowers and vegetables, and you’ve just realized that your air conditioner isn’t working properly. Your outdoor space is ready to be enjoyed, but without central air conditioning there isn’t anywhere for you to escape the high temperatures and heat that assault Toronto and the GTA throughout the summer.

Years ago central air conditioning was a luxury as many homes in Toronto, York Region and other places in the GTA didn’t have the ductwork necessary to accommodate a central air conditioner. Installing ductwork is an expensive and invasive project as well and many homeowners simply weren’t prepared to put that amount of money into their homes for a luxury. As summers have slowly gotten hotter and many older homes have been renovated the number that have central air conditioning has skyrocketed. Few Toronto homes don’t have central air conditioning and these homeowners now have the luxury of cool, evenly distributed air throughout their homes.

Aging Central Air Conditioning Systems

Central air conditioning systems typically last for up to 20 years depending on how well they’re taken care of over the years, but at the end of the day they’re machines and like all machines they require repairs, maintenance and eventually need replacing. Near the end of their lifespan it can be difficult to know if a central air conditioning system should be repaired or replaced from a financial perspective. While an older model might be reliable and the repairs small, they can add up over time and eventually become very costly. A new energy-efficient model will be reliable as well and will almost certainly save you money on your energy bills, but they come with a larger initial cost than many homeowners might be prepared for.

So, should you keep sinking money into an older model or spring for a new energy-efficient model?

Warranties & Repairs

Most central air conditioning systems come with a warranty that covers certain components and some maintenance and repairs depending on the specifics of the warranty. Once a warranty has expired and you’re paying out-of-pocket for big repairs and maintenance it’s time to start thinking about replacing your central air conditioning unit. Basically, by comparing the replacement cost to the monthly cost of running your air conditioner you can gauge whether you should replace it now or wait another year. When inefficiency and the cost of repairs starts to eclipse the cost of replacement or make a replacement seem viable then it’s probably time to pull the trigger on that shiny new efficient central air conditioning system you’ve had your eye on.

Rising Energy Bills

Over time you will notice that your energy bills will slowly increase as the efficiency of your air conditioning system decreases. At a certain point this increase may become substantial and running your air conditioner can become more expensive than it’s worth. This is the point where you should contact a reputable and professional central air conditioning company like Novel Care to evaluate your air conditioner. They’ll be able to tell you if repairs of replacement make more sense in relation to your mounting energy bills.

For more information about central air conditioning and when you should replace your system contact Novel Care today: 416-921-0000. Novel Care has been serving Toronto, York Region and the rest of the GTA for over 30 years with expert HVAC services.

Winter is on our doorstep Toronto and it’s time to get ready! Whether you live in Toronto, York Region, or somewhere else in the GTA you know what winters in Southern Ontario can be like, which is why it’s important to be prepared. When cold weather hits your furnace works day and might to keep you and your family warm and if it’s not in proper working order then there’s a chance it could break down when you need it most.

Pre Winter Toronto Furnace Repair

Ensuring that your furnace is working properly prior to the extreme cold setting in is essential to staying warm and safe all winter long. Risking a breakdown isn’t worth the trouble, but even if your furnace is very reliable proper Toronto furnace repair and maintenance services can help ensure the efficiency of your HVAC system. Furnace repair, boiler repair, and duct cleaning services can keep your HVAC components running as efficient as possible, which means they’ll be reliable and save you money on your energy bills. Waiting until winter has already come means that you’ve already cost yourself money on a poorly operating furnace or boiler. When it comes to furnace repair and maintenance the sooner you act, the better.

Toronto Furnace Repair & Duct Cleaning Services

Ensuring your furnace is running properly is important, but duct cleaning services are also important to keep your whole system running properly. Here are 3 key benefits of proper duct cleaning.

  1. Improving the air quality in your home: When your duct system is dirty the air quality in your home can drastically deteriorate, and during the winter you spend more time in your home than any other time during the year. This means that you’re continuously exposed to poor air quality in your home, which can lead to allergies, asthma, eye irritations, and even interrupt your sleeping habits. If your furnace is blowing dust, allergens, and dander throughout your home it can drastically lower your indoor air quality.
  2. Improving your home’s heating efficiency: Even if you have a brand new furnace you might be risking your home’s heating efficiency by not properly maintaining it and cleaning it. When your furnace is dirty it has to work harder to create warm air and send it throughout your home. A dirty duct system also impedes your furnace’s ability to properly heat your home adding even more stress on your system. As you allow your furnace to work harder through dirty components you’re straining the entire process, reducing it’s efficiency, costing yourself more money, and possibly reducing the lifespan of your furnace. Overall, this could lead to need a Toronto furnace repair specialist to undertake serious furnace repairs, which could be avoided through simple cleaning and maintenance.
  3. Lower your heating costs: Your HVAC system is an investment and in order to get the most out of it over time you need to properly maintain and clean it. By investing in professional Toronto furnace repairs and maintenance now, you’re saving yourself money in the long run by avoiding costly repairs and the premature replacement of your furnace. Overall, proper furnace repair and maintenance can lower your immediate and long-term costs when it comes to your HVAC system.
