Before the weather changes from ice-cold to sweltering hot, you might want to consider being prepared. Just like you’ve come to rely on your furnace or boiler in the winter to keep you warm, your air conditioner can really save you from sticking to the furniture on those muggy days. This is why some companies offer an air conditioner protection plan for residential cooling systems.

Why Do I Need A Protection Plan?

If you’re wondering this, chances are you’ve been very lucky. Consider this. It’s a hot, humid day and you’re parents are visiting from out-of-town. Sure, you could show them around the city. After all, Toronto and the GTA is a big enough place with plenty to offer, but they’ve had a long trip and just want to relax indoors. When it’s too hot to go outside, just imagine if your air conditioner decides to stop working. In the middle of a heat wave, this could prove to be downright dangerous for your parents who certainly didn’t travel all this way just to wipe sweat from their heads every few seconds. An Air Conditioner Protection Plan could help though.

What Is An Air Conditioner Protection Plan?

The simplest way to explain this is to say it’s a way to ensure your peace of mind, all year-long. Basically, if your air conditioner decides to break down, someone will be available to make repairs and help you without charging you for labour or parts! When you buy into a protection plan, you’ll be covered for however long you agree to. That’s why we offer Air Conditioner Protection Plans to every one of our customers!

In fact, you can click here for a complete list of items our Air Conditioner Protection Plan covers. And you’ll never have to worry about being covered in the future. We’ll automatically renew your Air Conditioner Protection Plan every year, unless you’d prefer not to have this payment in place.

Additionally, if a part is unavailable or has been discontinued for your model of air conditioner, we will gladly refund any money collected for the Air Conditioner Protection Plan, as long as no other service calls have been fulfilled during your agreement.

Still have a few questions? Novel Care also offers a boiler protection plan and furnace protection plan. Feel free to contact us at 416-921-0000! We’d love to hear from you and help ensure your home stays cool under the heat of summer.

It’s not common knowledge, but only 17% of homes in the world have air conditioning. Fortunately this statistic is going to change, soon, and very drastically. By the end of the century, within the next 84 years, the number of homes that have air conditioning will rise to about 70%. This isn’t anticipating any radial factors, but based on the growing demand of the global middle class population. The main way this will be achieved is through technology and the thought that merely cooling an individual’s personal space is much more affordable than an entire building. Consider things like office chairs that provide cooling, or shoes that keep individuals cool as they walk.

Technological Advances In Air Conditioning

It’s difficult to predict exactly, but the amount of energy that even the most efficient air conditioner models consume is a lot for some countries to digest. The United States Government is known for a lot of things, but the DELTA program isn’t one of their more popular ones. DELTA stands for Delivering Efficient Local Thermal Amenities.

For example, they’ve developed a prototype in RoCo, the robotic personal conditioning device. RoCo has a heater and air conditioner attached to a moving base that follows you around through the a signal on your smart phone. RoCo will gently blow warm or cool air at your to help regulate your temperature. In a commercial building, up to 30 percent of energy costs could be saved, especially if RoCo is charged using solar technology.

DELTA has also come up with a wireless powered climate-controlled office chair. It uses only 14 watts to providing heating for its user and 4 watts for cooling. It has cooling and heating elements that are assisted by small fans, and when not in use the whole system powers down to save energy.

One of the most impressive technologies are the thermoregulation of shoes. DELTA calls this the ReBoot, which have thin insoles with water channels running through them. Working like an air conditioner the water absorbs the heat from your feet and disperses it through a small fan in the boot. This works because the feet are part of the body’s cooling system and give off a lot of heat. By making them more efficient the body will cool off faster.

These technologies aren’t currently available on the market, so while we all wait for our own personal cooling accessories we’ll continue to rely on high-efficiency central and ductless air conditioning systems.

When it comes to the efficiency of your home, your cooling and heating systems account for a lot of your energy bill. If you’re not sure if your system is running correctly you might be tempted to call an HVAC technician for air conditioning repair services. Ultimately, it’s the best way to get your system working properly, but first it’s important to find out if your system needs attention.

You may notice that your air conditioner isn’t cooling your home as quickly as it used to. You’ve put your hand over the vent or register and it’s hard to tell if the air is warmer than it was a month ago, or even last summer. One simple way to test if your air conditioner is running properly is to use a thermometer.

Use A Thermometer, Then Call For Air Conditioning Repair

The easiest way to find out if your air conditioner needs a tune up or air conditioning repair services is with this easy test. Turn on your air conditioner and leave it running for at least 15 minutes. Ensure that the temperature outside is above 80 degrees F, and that the air filter is clean. Next place a thermometer on the register that’s closest to the indoor cooling equipment and leave it there for at least 5 minutes. Next do the same on the return of intake vent that sucks air from your home to be cooled. The air that’s coming out of the furnace should be 15 – 20 degrees F cooler than the air that’s being sucked in. If the air that’s coming out is less than 15 degree F cooler than there might be a problem with your air conditioner.

Issues could range between low refrigerant, leaking refrigerant, a blockage, poor air circulation, and more.

Overall, this is a good way to tell if your air conditioner is operating as efficiently as possible. Low efficiency could mean you need air conditioning repair or maintenance services.

In case you haven’t noticed it’s exceptionally hot in Toronto these days. Toronto weather trends have been hot, and even with rain in the forecast there won’t be much relief. Sure it’s summer, but most people have noticed that this summer is turning out to be very hot and very dry. This combination can cause a number of problems for people with allergies and respiratory diseases.

The combination of hot and dry Toronto weather means that there is more matter floating in the air, which means there’s more matter floating in the air in your home. People with allergies to dust and other particles could find themselves having a late summer sneeze here and there.

For people with respiratory diseases this Toronto weather can be difficult to take. Breathing in hot heavy air can be challenging and with the risk of dehydration peaking it’s important to stay indoors and out of direct sunlight.

Relief From Toronto Weather

As HVAC professionals we know that one of the best ways to beat the hot dry Toronto weather is to ensure your air conditioner is working properly. Your air conditioner not only provides you and your family with cool and refreshing air, but it also filters the air in your home. This is one of the best ways to improve your indoor air quality.

With so much dust and other particles floating in the air the filter on your air conditioner and HVAC system will be working overtime. Be sure to check it at least once a month throughout the summer to ensure it’s not clogged, and is allowing proper airflow.

Sitting in the shade on a hot day is a great way to stay cool. Well, the same goes for your air conditioner. Air conditioning efficiency is heavily impacted by the amount of heat and sun being placed on your air conditioner. If shaded by a tree for most of the day your cooling system won’t have to work as hard as it would if it were in direct sunlight. As a result it’ll run more efficiently and you’ll save money on your energy bills.

If an air conditioner’s compressor or condenser sits in the hot sun it has to cool itself off as well as the air that it draws from inside the house. A cooler air conditioner will not only save you money, but it will have a longer life and require less maintenance over the years. On top of that adding greenery to your yard is always beneficial in terms of cooling your home and yard overall.

There are other options to keep the sun off your air conditioner. Sun shades and other elevated covers or awnings that are made specifically for air conditioners are also excellent, yet less natural, ways to keep your air conditioner cool.

Impeding Air Conditioning Efficiency

One thing to note when planting trees and other shrubs to shade your air conditioner is not to have them too close. Your air conditioner relies on the space and air surrounding it to work properly and efficiently. When the leaves of trees and bushes reduce the airflow around your air conditioner it has to work harder to move the air around it. Additionally, if a tree or bush is too close it can get scorched by the air conditioner, so keeping them at a safe distance is also in their best interest.

It’s also important to make sure that the trees or bushes you plant don’t drop lots of seeds, which can fall into your air conditioner and cause problems.

When they were initially introduced into the consumer market air conditioners were considered a luxury. Now they’re a normal, expected and essential part of residential and office environments.

Homeowners and business owners rely on air conditioners to keep their spaces cool and comfortable during the summer months. Aside from the cooling benefits of air conditioners there are multiple other ways they can benefit your home or work environment.

The Benefits of Air Conditioners

  1. Air conditioners help combat the negative effects of extreme heat such as temporary physical and intellectual impairment.
  2. Air conditioning make home and work environments much more comfortable in hot summer months.
  3. Air conditioning systems contribute to heightened job performance by allowing workers to focus on their jobs rather than the temperature of their workplace.
  4. Lower temperatures reduce the presence of insects and parasites in both the home and office. Bugs and other critters typically like warm and moist environments, which air conditioners eliminate.
  5. Air conditioners are essential to avoiding dehydration during the summertime. Extreme or even moderate heat has the ability to dehydrate workers and family members in the summer.
  6. A clean and properly maintained air conditioning system rids your environment of dust, allergens, pollens and other unpleasant particles.
  7. Air conditioning is an easy way to improve the air quality in your home or office. Air conditioning systems continuously circulate the air and in doing so filter and clean it, which maintains easy to breathe air.

Overall, there are numerous benefits to air conditioning systems in just about every residential or commercial environment. It’s important to keep it well maintained and properly serviced and cleaned on a regular basis to reap all the benefits.

Just about everywhere you look these days someone is telling you how hot it is outside and to find air conditioning. The weatherman is constantly proclaiming a heat warning, seniors are being told to stay indoors, and 60 sunscreen is flying off store shelves.

It might seem like the amount of advice you get during the summer is overwhelming, but everyone just has your best interests in mind. At Novel Care we do as well, which is why we’ve put together this short list of 3 ways that air conditioning is good for your health.

Air Conditioning is Healthy

  1. Dehydration: This might not be news to you, but in the summer you sweat. Sometimes you might not realize how much moisture your body is actually losing until you feel dizzy, get a headache or any other symptoms of dehydration. It can happen fast, so while drinking lots of water is an important part of keeping cool, ensuring you have easy access to air conditioning is essential. You body can take time to hydrate, but by keeping your body cool you’re reducing the amount you sweat and your core temperature.
  2. Clean Air: Air conditioning is designed to do just that, “condition” the air. In doing so the air that’s circulated through your air conditioner is filtered. Pollen, dust, smells and other particles are removed and the air you’re now breathing is much cleaner and healthier.
  3. Humidity: Humidity might not be a big deal to you, but some people have difficulty breathing when humidity is high. Additionally, humidity is also a major contributor to mould growth. If mould is allowed to form in your home you’ll be breathing in mould spores, which can contribute to a number of respiratory issues.

As the first heat wave of summer is upon us you’ll be relying on your air conditioner to keep your family cool and comfortable. When temperatures rise into the high 20s and 30s your air conditioner and HVAC system has to work even harder to maintain your specific temperature setting. Keeping your air conditioner and HVAC system is good working order is the best way to make sure it works when you need it to. There’s nothing worse than sitting through a heat wave while waiting for an HVAC professional to come and fix your air conditioner. Remember lots of people have air conditioners that break during heat waves so most HVAC companies, especially reputable ones like Novel Care, get booked up much quicker than they normally do.

4 Ways To Keep Your Air Conditioner Running

  1. Professional Air Conditioner Maintenance: In the spring, before summer is here, it’s important to have your air conditioner and HVAC system tuned up by a professional. It might not seem like a big deal, but it’s essential to have specific things done by a professional so your system is running as efficiently as possible. Some parts can be damaged if not cleaned properly, which is why a professional from a reputable company like Novel Care should be tasked with your air conditioner maintenance.
  2. Replace Your Air Filters: Your air conditioner and HVAC system might have one or more air filters that need to be changed or cleaned on a regular basis. This is one of the easiest things that you can do to maintain the efficiency of your air conditioner and HVAC system. Replacing the filter also helps to reduce the amount of dust, pollen and other allergens in your home. Overall, a clean HVAC filter ensures that all the internal parts of your system are dust free and clean.
  3. Stop Tinkering With Your Thermostat: Find a comfortable temperature for your home and then leave your thermostat alone. Once you find that temperature it’s important to set it for times during the day when you’re actually home. When you’re not home set your thermostat to maintain a higher temperature so it uses less energy. A programmable thermostat should only be adjusted if your habits change and you find yourself home during an irregular time. Overall, once you set it the less you tamper with it means that your air conditioner and HVAC system will run more efficiently.
  4. Cover Your Windows: Blinds, shades, curtains or any other type of window covering help keep the sun out during the day when it’s very hot. When the sun shines through a window it turns your home into a fishbowl and super-heats the air. As a result your air conditioner has to work extra hard to cool your home. Planting trees and other foliage in your yard to block the sun can also help.

Temperatures in Toronto are finally beginning to level out and it looks like Spring is here to stay. Before you know it the heat of summer will be bearing down on us and you may wonder “why isn’t my air conditioner working?” Hopefully most of us don’t wait until a heat wave hits to ask this question, but if you do there are a few simple reasons that might make it true.

With proper maintenance and care your air conditioner should effectively run well throughout a summer, but not every air conditioner issue is completely avoidable. One of the most common questions we get every spring when people turn their air conditioners on for the first time is Why isn’t my air conditioner working? Here are a few reasons as to why it might not be working the way it should be.

Check Your Thermostat

First of all the batteries in your thermostat need to be changed at least once a year. There will typically always be enough juice in them to ensure the digital display is on, but your thermostat also needs to have enough power to send an activation signal to your furnace and air conditioner. If the batteries are dying they might not have enough power to get that signal to your air conditioning unit.

If your air conditioner still isn’t turning on then check the temperature settings to ensure that they haven’t been changed. Other family members might have adjusted the temperature to suit their preferences, and as a result it might be warmer than you’re accustomed to.

Damage To Ductwork

If you have a central air conditioner then your duct system is an essential part of it. Cracked, bent or ductwork with holes in it might be letting air escape into the walls of your home or other exposed areas in your basement. This can drastically reduce the amount of air that’s actually making it to your vents and out into your home.

It’s also a good idea to inspect your vents for blockages. If you had recent construction activities in your home and materials have fallen into vents or you have smaller family members who are prone to putting things down the vents then you might have a blockage that’s limiting airflow.

Free Your Condenser

The condenser is the large part of your air conditioning system that resides outside of your home. If this unit gets blocked by plants, trees, bushes, garbage, chairs, leaves or any other debris its efficiency can be affected. A dirty or blocked condenser won’t be able to receive enough air to release heat from its coils. When a condenser is obstructed it can shut down or turn on and off repeatedly, which is known as short-cycling. Keeping your condenser clean and clear of debris is not only important to keep it running but essential to its efficiency.

So, Why Isn’t My Air Conditioner Working?

There are numerous reasons for air conditioner problems, some more technical than others. If you try these solutions and still don’t have any luck give Novel Care a call and one of our technicians will be able to assist you. Keep your family cool this summer, contact Novel Care today: 416-921-0000.

Summer in Toronto and the GTA can be unbearable without an air conditioner that’s functioning properly. While it’s important to schedule annual air conditioner maintenance with a reputable company like Novel Care, homeowners can do more than they think when it comes to air conditioner maintenance. Essentially, there are a few important steps that can be taken prior to flipping your thermostat over to cooling from heating in the spring. Understanding the basics of your air conditioner is the best place to start understanding the important of air conditioner maintenance.

The Basics of Air Conditioning

Understanding how your systems works is a great way to understand the important of air conditioner maintenance. A central air conditioning system consists of 3 main components:

  • A Condenser
  • A Blower
  • Ductwork

The condenser is the large metal box that you see outside of your home. This regulates the temperature of the refrigerant or Freon, which travels back and forth from the condenser to the inside of your home. The condenser pressurizes the Freon gas and turns it into a liquid, which is now at a high temperature. It then gets sent back into the house to the blower unit. As it comes in contact with the blower unit it becomes a gas again and as a result becomes much colder. This cold Freon gas then enters the blower coil, which is located in your duct system, and cools the air that is blown over it and into your duct system and out into your home. The cycle is repeated until the temperature set by the thermostat is reached.

Now that you have a basic understanding about how your air conditioning system works it’s easy to see why certain components should be maintained by professional HVAC technicians, but here are a few things that you can do as a homeowner.

Air Conditioner Maintenance: Filters

Your system’s filter is typically located at the blower unit where the duct system meets the condenser. Air flow is the most important part of your entire system, so ensuring that your filter is clean and changed regularly is essential to the efficiency and viability of your system. If your filter gets too dirty and restricts airflow it can dramatically impact your system’s efficiency, how well it cools your home, and even cost you money as efficiency drops.

Air Conditioner Maintenance: Water Damage

Warm air is continually passing over your cooling coil, which means condensation will occur and beads of moisture are created on the coils. Typically this moisture is sent through a tube and into a drain in your basement or a pan located under the unit. If your unit isn’t draining properly this water can cause damage to other components of your unit and even result in mold growth if not addressed.

Air Conditioner Maintenance: Obstructions

As mentioned one of the most important things in your air conditioning system is airflow. This also includes the airflow to the condenser unit outside. In order to operate properly the condenser unit needs to have a decent amount of airflow. When things like trees, bushes, patio furniture, and shrubs restrict airflow you unit has to work harder to do its job, which reduces its effectiveness and efficiency.

Ductwork Maintenance

There are a few easy things to monitor when it comes to your duct system:

  • Ensure that the vents in your duct system aren’t obstructed in any way and can easily distribute cool air throughout your home.
  • Check your system for mold: Condensation can accumulate in parts of your duct system and this moisture can turn into mold if not addressed. Cleaning your vents and duct system is one of the best ways to keep your home free of mold.
  • Basements are traditional cooler than the rest of a house, so it’s ideal to adjust the dampers of your duct system in the basement to force more cool air to the upper levels of your home in the summer.

Overall understanding your air conditioning system is the best way to take care of it and perform some basic air conditioner maintenance in between professional air conditioner maintenance appointments.

Winter is finally over and it’s officially time to start thinking about getting your air conditioner ready for summer with AC repair and tune up services. When the first hot day attacks Toronto the last thing you want is to switch on your air conditioner only to find out that it doesn’t work, or isn’t working properly.

When your air conditioner sits idle all winter long sticks, leaves and other debris end up inside, on top and all around it, and as a result a small bit of maintenance and repair can go a long way. While Novel Care has the fastest service response times in Toronto and the GTA even we get busy during the hot summer months, which is why it’s important to schedule an AC repair visit sooner than later. There are something you can take care of as a homeowner prior to your regularly scheduled Novel Care service appointment. Here are 5 tips that can help get your air conditioner ready for summer.

  1. Filters: When it comes to AC repair this is one of the easiest things that can be done. Cleaning and replacing your furnace or air-handler filter whenever it’s dirty and especially prior to turning on your air conditioner will unblock any restricted airflow.
  2. Condenser Coils: Central air conditioner condenser coils are in the large unit outside of your home. Overtime and over the winter this unit can gather debris in, on top, and around it and keeping it clear of all debris is important. Essentially, anything that obstructs the airflow reduces the efficiency. Unless you’re completely comfortable dismantling and cleaning your air conditioning unit this might be best left to a professional HVAC technician.
  3. External Debris: Cleaning out he inside is important but also clearing debris from around your unit can improve it’s efficiency. Ensuring that there are no trees, shrubs, bricks, or anything else piled up near your unit is essential to its efficiency.
  4. Coolant Lines: Refrigerant tubes or pipes that run from the evaporator to the air handler (typically covered in foam) should be inspected. Ensure that all tubes are properly insulated and if not replace the insulation. Energy loss can occur through exposed areas in coolant lines.
  5. Test 1, 2 3: Once there have been a number of dry days where the unit doesn’t have any moisture it’s time to turn on your unit and test it out. If your unit isn’t running properly then your Novel Care AC Repair technician will be able to fix it. Not to worry steps 1 – 4 haven’t been a waste as they make it much easier for a technician to work on your unit.

Don’t wait until the hot day of summer are upon us to get your air conditioner ready to go. For more information about AC repair and booking an appointment contact Novel Care today: 416-921-0000
