Buy ENERGY STAR To Save Money!

Cut your electrical heating bill by 60%, depending on your climate, and cool for 30% less with an ENERGY STAR certified ductless heating and cooling system. Ductless heat pumps that have earned the ENERGY STAR Most Efficient designation are the best of the best – they’ll save you more energy than standard models. Ductless heat pumps are easy to install, avoiding bulky ductwork in your home or building. They can also have a big impact on your comfort while helping you save money.

Key Features

  • Cut your heating costs in half! Because heat pumps transfer heat instead of generating heat, ENERGY STAR certified ductless mini-split heat pumps use 60% less energy than standard homes with conventional electric resistance-based heating systems
  • Cut cooling costs by 30% compared to conventional room air conditioners – ENERGY STAR certified ductless mini-split heat pumps used advanced technology compressors and fans that can adjust speeds to save energy
  • Different climates in each room – each indoor unit can provide custom heating and cooling – adjustable through wall consoles, remote controls, and smartphone apps
  • No bulky ductwork! Inside units attached to your wall connect to an outside unit using small refrigerant lines (see figure below)

Helpful Tips

Consider upgrading to ductless mini-split heat pumps in these situations:

  • In homes with costly electric heat and cooling (e.g. baseboard; electric radiant, furnace)
  • Older homes with no ductwork
  • Homes with expensive central heating due to high fuel costs
  • You have rooms that are not regularly occupied
  • Spaces next to unconditioned spaces where ductwork would be exposed (e.g. above a garage)
  • Additions or outbuildings where extending ductwork is not feasible (e.g. shed, barn, garage)

Ductless Heating and Cooling Installation

These wall-mounted heating and cooling units are air-source heat pumps, which draw heat from the outside air during cold weather and push heat outside during the summer cooling season.

An indoor unit connects to an outdoor unit using small refrigerant lines. Only a three-inch hole in an outdoor wall is needed for installation. Up to 8 indoor units can be attached to one outdoor unit.

What’s In a Label?

Air-source heat pumps in Canada can have two labels:

The ENERGY STAR symbol means the model is highly energy efficient.
The voluntary EnerGuide label shows the model”s Seasonal Energy Efficiency Ratio (SEER) or cooling efficiency and how it compares to similar models.

Ductless Heating and Cooling: What’s Coming?

Some people wonder whether heat pumps work in colder climates. As temperatures drop, the heat pump has to work harder and harder to extract heat from air outside. Some heat pumps now use advanced compressors and refrigerants that allow for improved low-temperature performance. If this is a concern, look for ENERGY STAR models with a Heating Seasonal Performance Factor (HSPF) of over 12.0 BTU/Wh4.

The ENERGY STAR Promise

All ENERGY STAR certified products are tested to meet strict efficiency specifications and are certified by an independent third party. They perform the same as or better than standard products without compromising performance in any way.

Ductless Heating and Cooling Regulations Set the Energy Efficiency Minimum

Air-source, ground-source and water-source heat pumps are subject to Canada’s Energy Efficiency Regulations, which set a minimum performance standard for their energy efficiency. Find details in the Guide to the Regulations.

Most people have heard of ductless heating and cooling systems, and they have probably seen the small, indoor devices installed high on walls in homes, restaurants or office buildings. But what do you really know about these systems?

1. They Offer Highly Flexible Solutions

Whereas traditional heat pumps and central air conditioning systems force cooled and heated air through ducts, ductless heating and cooling systems deliver air directly into different zones. They are comprised of a small outdoor unit and one or more indoor units that require nothing more than mounting capabilities and access to electricity.

Sometimes referred to as split systems, mini-split systems, multi-split systems, or split-ductless systems, ductless heating and cooling offer home and business owners a cost-effective way to replace inefficient window air conditioning units, space heaters, and electric baseboard heaters. They can be installed in home additions, new construction, condominiums, and apartments, or to improve temperature control in specific rooms. Ductless systems can even be fit for buildings that currently use ducted forced-air systems.

2. Ductless Heating and Cooling Systems Save You Money

One of the biggest reasons why homeowners switch to ductless heating and cooling is overall cost savings. In recent years, utility costs across the country have skyrocketed. When a home’s temperature depends upon an inefficient system, monthly bills can quickly climb out of control. Ductless heating and air conditioning systems operate on less power – they are smaller than traditional forced-air systems, and because the temperature-controlled air is delivered directly into a room, there is no loss of efficiency. Multi-split systems also allow homeowners to create “zones” in their homes, which means they no longer have to cool or heat rooms that aren’t occupied.

In addition to saving money on utilities, homeowners may also be eligible for tax credits or utility rebates for the year they install a ductless air conditioning and heating system. There are many programs at the federal, provincial and local levels that allow homeowners and businesses to take advantage of these additional savings.

3. They Improve Indoor Air Quality – Happy Breathing!

Often times, the quality of indoor air can actually be lower than the quality of outdoor air. With traditional HVAC systems, air ducts must be professionally cleaned on a regular basis, and even after cleaning, dust and allergens are left behind. Ductless air conditioning and heating systems, on the other hand, offer multi-stage filtration that can drastically reduce dust, bacteria, pollen, allergens and other particulates in the air.

4. Ductless Heating and Cooling Systems Are Quick and Easy to Install

Installing a traditional, ducted system can take several weeks and disrupts daily activities in the home. Ductless systems are far less invasive to install, and depending upon the number of indoor and outdoor units required, they can be up and running in as little as one day.

Mini-split systems run on small pipes that require a mere three-inch hole. That means homeowners don’t have to worry about rebuilding walls or ceilings around ductwork and there is no loss of precious square footage.

5. Ductless Air Conditioning Lowers Your Carbon Footprint

The small size of a ductless cooling system and its zoning capabilities allows for greater energy efficiency. Ductless heating and air conditioning systems follow ENERGY STAR guidelines, which means they are far more energy-efficient than the minimum standards set forth by the U.S. federal government. Improved efficiency saves money, of course, but it also helps reduce your total carbon output.

Additionally, ductless systems take advantage of advances in chemistry to reduce effects on the environment. Ductless systems use a refrigerant called R410A, which is known for its zero ozone depletion potential. This means the system will have less impact on the environment throughout its lifecycle.

Ductless air conditioning and heating systems are energy-efficient, environmentally friendly and completely customizable. They offer homeowners the ability to cool and heat specific zones of their home to the exact temperature they desire, providing consistent and exceptional year-round comfort.

Most people don’t know that their air conditioning system has a condensate line or drain hose to allow the condensation to drip off and safely leave the system. Essentially, the condensate line is a tube that moves water from the air handler to a drain or place outdoors, depending on the way your system is configured. Sometimes, your system will do something weird like turn on and off rapidly or simply not cool properly as the only sign that your condensation line needs cleaning or attention.

Why Is There A Condensate Line?

In a modern HVAC system, the air from your cold air return is pulled across a special coil that gets really cold when the gases inside are compressed. As that warm air passes over the coil and is cooled, it the liquid it was carrying as vapour, which is them collected in a condensate pan underneath the coil. The condensation then goes out down a tube from the pan into a drain or outside into the ground.

It’s a fairly simple system, but if the tube gets clogged you can be in real trouble.

When the condensation line is blocked, this process is disrupted. Some air handlers are designed to essentially stop working until the standing water is removed from the pan, others will simply spill everything onto the floor or into a wall, which can lead to water damage and even damage to your system. This is why it’s usually recommended that you flush that condensation line every time you change your HVAC air filter.

If you suspect a clogged condensation line, flushing it with straight vinegar or a diluted vinegar/ hot water mix can get the water out of the condensate pan. If you aren’t certain how to do this yourself give us a call at Novel Care. We’re always happy to help: 416-921-0000

That’s right, it’s finally spring! The sun is out longer, people are generally happier, the snow is melting and we all have to start thinking about the chores that come with the warmer weather. That’s means it’s time to get a spring ductless check-up.

What Is A Spring Ductless Check-Up?

A spring ductless check-up is basically a maintenance appointment for your ductless air conditioner. This spring ductless check-up is the best way to ensure that your ductless air conditioner or heat pump is ready to keep you and your family cool throughout the spring and summer months.

Over the fall and winter your ductless air conditioner can experience wear and tear, the filter can get clogged and the components might fall out of sync. These are all typical things that might happen over the course of a few months, but not a big deal, unless you ignore them.

Scheduling a spring ductless check-up is the best way to ensure that your ductless air conditioner or heat pump is operating as efficiently and properly as it can be. When your ductless unit is operating efficiently is uses less energy to perform it cooling functions, in turn it uses less energy and as a result costs you less on your monthly energy bills.

On top of that, you can catch any small issues before they turn into big problems, which will save you even more money in the long run.

Call Novel Care Today

Give us a call today to schedule your spring dustless check-up. Novel Care has been providing ductless air conditioning services to the people of Toronto for over 35 years. that means we have the knowledge and experience you want to properly maintain your ductless air conditioner. As the days get longer, you’ll start to feel the temperature climb too. In Toronto and the GTA, almost everyone has air conditioning to battle the rising heat of the summer months, but which type is right for you? Thankfully there are only two choices, but choosing between ductless and central could have a lot to do with your living situation and budget.

Ductless Costs Less Than Central Air Conditioning

It really does depend on your home, but ductless is less invasive to install, making it more cost-effective. For example, central air conditioning is great for cooling off a home but only if you have the necessary vents/ducts in place. Central takes cold air from the main unit and pushes it through the vents of a home to spread the cool air to all rooms evenly. This is great if your home is equipped with the necessary ductwork. If it isn’t, you can imagine how expensive it might get to have your home fitted with the required vents and ducts.

Ductless on the other hand is a great alternative to central air conditioning. A ductless unit can be installed to cool a given area of your home. Most often, this option is installed in a large common area of the home like a living room or family room for maximum effectiveness.

How Ductless Air Conditioning Works

Designed to work best for spot cooling, ductless air conditioning can be a single subtle unit installed to help you beat the heat. It draws in air from outside, runs it through the unit for cooling, and redistributes the air to the given room via a small fan. It doesn’t require too much work to install, which is great for those looking to cool off without breaking the bank. Also, the subtle design of ductless air conditioning means it won’t clash with the room’s décor.

Naturally, you can choose to have more than one ductless air conditioning unit in a bigger home, but this is something a professional can recommend after seeing your residence.

In 2010, we had a client reach out to us with a few questions about if whether a ductless cooling unit made sense for her. Here’s how Novel Care was able to help.

Is A Ductless Cooling Unit Worth It?

That was the main question we received from Cheryl one spring afternoon. Cheryl was a single mother who had pretty much had enough of living in her older condo unit without any form of air conditioning. She had just moved in last year and her 2-year-old wasn’t a fan of the hot humid temperatures that Toronto and the GTA tend to get in the summer. Fans weren’t doing the trick, so Cheryl wanted to inquire about a ductless cooling unit.

She said she was referred by another client of ours and heard good things. Admittedly, she said she didn’t really know too much about ductless cooling units, so we gladly took some time to explain the pros and cons.

Save More With A Ductless Cooling Unit

After walking Cheryl through her options, she came to the conclusion that a ductless cooling unit made sense for her one bedroom condo. Since the space is just big enough and all on one floor, ductless would serve to cool the space quite nicely.

We got to work right away so she would be ready for the upcoming summer, and got the job done in great time. Cheryl called back at the end of the summer to thank us for taking the time to help her out, and that her little one slept through those warm summer nights.

Temperatures are going to finally hit summer levels this week, with the possibility of 30 degrees celsius. That means many Toronto residents will be kicking tires on a new ductless air conditioner or ductless air conditioning system. When old ductless air conditioners need to be replaced it can be a big expense for some families. Making the right choice is important.

Choosing A New Ductless Air Conditioner

If your old ductless air conditioner has stopped working or you need to add one to your existing system, then you likely know a thing or two about ductless AC units. However, it’s probably been a while since you last bought one, and since then a lot has changed. Advances in technology has led to many upgrades in ductless air conditioning functionality and reliability. As a result there are many more options to choose from, and navigating all the details can be cumbersome.

Many new ductless air conditioners are high-efficiency, which means they will use less electricity to cool your home. Many of them also have two cycles, which also helps them use less energy. Two cycles allow the unit to use less energy to maintain and cool temperature, and more energy to initially reach a cooler temperature faster. Overall, the objective is to use as little energy to cool your home.

There are also many new functions and settings in ductless air conditioners, depending on the make and model you’re interested in. They can be set in so many different ways to be customized to your lifestyle and needs.

With all this in mind it might seem overwhelming to choose a new ductless air conditioner. That’s not the case. What most homeowners should do when choosing a new ductless air conditioner is to talk to a ductless air conditioning expert.

Upgrades to your home are an important investment in Toronto and the GTA. That’s why it’s important to remember to know what you’re buying. Take a look below to get a bit more familiar with the pros and cons of ductless heating and air conditioning before searching for the right person to install the unit in your home.

Getting Started

Ductless heating and air conditioning is a good option if you’re looking to control the temperature of a given area of your home only. Designed for smaller homes, these spot cooling units work best at reducing the amount of energy used, keeping bills noticeably lower in the long-term. However, it’s important to remember that these are ideal for areas of your home only. To heat or cool a larger home could see your costs increase to include additional units.

What make these a good investment has to do with the makeup of your home. Instead of the central air conditioning option, ductless avoids the use of vents and duct systems. This is good for you since the energy being lost in ductwork can be as high as 30%, which mean higher bills. Also, the better insulated your home is, the better ductless heating and air conditioning can perform, just like with a boiler and radiator system. The energy being used to heat or cool a room isn’t wasted, which helps keep bills lower for you.

Top Ductless Heating And Air Conditioning Brands

Once you’ve decided to choose ductless over the central option, you’ll want to know which brands stand out from the rest. Take a look above at what some of the top companies have to offer. Each one has a nice variety of models to choose from, and quality craftsmanship that are worth investing in.

There are a lot of factors to consider, and blindly recommending one model over another without knowing the conditions of your home isn’t the best way to go about making upgrades that are ideal. Contacting the right professional can go a long way in making the choice that’s right for your home, and your budget.

For those of you lucky enough to own a home in Toronto and the GTA, you know what that’s worth. The last thing you’d want to do is jeopardize its value with a wonky installation of any renovations. That’s why it’s so important to find the right Toronto ductless air company for your cooling needs.

Leave The Upgrades To A Toronto Ductless Air Company

When it comes to older homes, central air conditioning isn’t always an affordable option. Installation is run through an entire home, making it quite invasive and costly. This is why ductless air conditioning is a much more reasonable and cost-effective choice.

Providing spot cooling to areas of your home, ductless can help control the temperature of whichever room it’s in. Installation is much simpler too. It consists of a unit indoors, a compressor outdoors, and tubing to connect the two. This drastically lowers the amount of work it takes, which helps keep the cost of installation much more reasonable.

Don’t forget, ductless air conditioning has many benefits to an older home, but this way of cooling your home depends on its size and how well insulated it is. The bigger the home, the more units you might need to keep it cool when the mercury rises on a hot day. Also, if insulation is poor, you might end up seeing that reflected on your next energy bill – no matter which type of cooling unit you have. Most important of all, you should always have the right Toronto ductless air company handling all your installation and maintenance needs. This not only ensures you get a quality installation, but also helps with liability too.

Which Toronto Ductless Air Company Should I Choose?

In Toronto and the GTA, there is no shortage of handymen and other do-it-yourselfers available for hire, but that doesn’t mean they’re right for you. It’s important to think of your home as an investment. Each renovation or upgrade you make should be done right to avoid any problems in the future. Plus, the more professional the upgrade, the more value is added to your home. That’s why, when it comes to narrowing down which Toronto ductless air company to use, you should do a bit of research.

If you’re one of the lucky few to have a home in Toronto and the GTA, you probably fall into one of two categories. The first sees people building up a “fixer-upper” into their dream home. This is great if you have the funds to do so. Seeing as more and more people are proving that money doesn’t grow on trees, you might be part of another group. This second group might not have the disposable income to pour into pricey renovations and need more practical solutions. Ductless air conditioning systems are exactly that. They allow homeowners to experience the positive effects of air conditioning without having the expense of installing a central unit.

Upgrade Your Home with Ductless Air Conditioning Systems

In the case of older homes, central air conditioning may not be available and in Toronto and the GTA, that just won’t do. Summers can get quite uncomfortable with the humidity, but installing a central unit is a big job. A lot goes into setting up the proper ventilation of your home. Ductless air conditioning systems help on a much more affordable scale.

Overall, they serve a smaller portion of your home, requiring less installation and cost. Choosing ductless air conditioning systems is straight forward. You’ll decide which room you want to keep the coolest and that’s where a unit will be set up. Additionally, tubing will connect the indoor unit with a compressor outside. This minimizes the amount of installation necessary, keeping your costs lower.

Just remember, ductless air conditioning systems are designed to cool smaller areas. Spot cooling can be as effective as central air conditioning, but only in a given area. That means you may need more than one unit installed if you’re looking to control the temperature of a larger home or even one with more than one floor. This is an excellent solution if your home is thoroughly insulated though.

Who do I call to install ductless air conditioning systems?

It’s always important to find the right person for any job regarding your home. Saving a few bucks upfront and cutting corners is never the answer, and certainly won’t protect your investment in the case of your home. Be sure to put in a bit of time finding a professional with experience installing ductless air conditioning systems.

At Novel Care, we’ve spent the past 30 years serving Toronto and the GTA. Our experts specialize in HVAC maintenance and installation, which include ductless air conditioning systems. Rest assured, our customer service and satisfaction are second to none. In fact, we’re available 24/7 to help with any emergency repairs or problems you might experience. Contact us at 416-921-0000 to get started. We’d be more than happy to help you stay cool this summer.

Ductless air conditioner maintenance is just as important as the maintenance of any other machine in your home. Your furnace, central air conditioner and car all need regular maintenance to run efficiently and so does your ductless air conditioner. Ductless air conditioners have a reputation for reliability, and with advances in technology, they’re one of the most reliable cooling choices on the market.

Ductless air conditioners rarely have call-backs after installation and overall the systems are incredibly maintenance-friendly. Typically, ductless air conditioner maintenance consists of filter replacement, condenser coil cleaning, and sometimes flushing the pipes to ensure there are no blockages.

Ductless Air Conditioner Maintenance is Easy

We’ve said it many times, ductless air conditioner maintenance is easy. The clean and simple design of these units fosters easy upkeep. This allows homeowners to do much of the maintenance themselves if they’re comfortable doing it. For this reason, ductless air conditioners have continuously grabbed more of the global air conditioning market share with advances such as:

  • The expansion of the available capacities up to 48,000 BTU
  • Longer pipe lengths that can reach up to 100 feet, and even in some cases a linear length of up to 230 feet
  • Greater height separation between the condenser and air handler, commonly 65 feet, but also in some instances up to 164 feet
  • Expanded operation range can be as low as 0°F in both cooling and heating modes. It can also range as high as 115°F in cooling mode
  • Efficiency levels of ductless air conditioners are typically above and beyond government-mandated minimum standards
  • They’re very user-friendly, operate as easy as television and are packed with great features.

With so many features and simple maintenance on these very user-friendly air conditioners they one of the best cooling solutions on the market.

Ductless air conditioning installation isn’t just for homes that don’t have ductwork. Some homes with existing ductwork might have rooms or areas with poor air circulation or temperature regulation. Ductless air conditioning installation is an excellent way to spot-cool specific areas or rooms in your home.

Running ductwork is an expensive, time-consuming, and messy process. It might seem like a good idea to just spread your existing ductwork throughout your home, so you don’t have to purchase new equipment, but there are better options.

Ductless Air Conditioning

Adding a ductless air conditioner to your home to support your existing central air conditioner isn’t uncommon. Many homes that have long hallways or additions that haven’t properly incorporated ductwork need additional cooling options. Ductless air conditioning installation is easy, clean, and fast. Most of all it’s much more affordable than ripping out walls, putting in new duct systems where you can, and then drywalling, patching and painting all over again.

A professional and reputable ductless air conditioning installation technician can have a unit installed in your home in less than a day.

Ductless Unit Are Ideal For…

Ductless air conditioning installation companies will help you choose a unit and a spot for your unit in your home. Many homeowners know there’s a problem, but they don’t know what to do. Professional HVAC technicians like the ones at Novel Care can help you with the entire process from beginning to end.

Ductless Air Conditioners are great in:

  • garages
  • additions
  • sunrooms
  • sheds
  • basements
  • hallways
  • stairways
  • and any other room or area that doesn’t have proper cooling or air circulation.

Ductless air conditioners are very quiet, even more than the quietest ceiling mounted fans, and they take up less space. They come with remote controls and when properly configured are incredibly energy-efficient. They’re also better than adding ductwork because ductwork can typically lose up to 30% of its cool air as it travels through your home.
