You might be looking at your energy bill this month wondering why it’s so expensive all the time. Well, one way that you can reduce the cost is to make the appliances and systems in your home more efficient. One place to start is to increase the efficiency of your furnace.

As furnaces age, they slowly become less and less efficient, but with care and maintenance, it doesn’t have to be a major problem.

Make the Efficiency of Your Furnace a Non-Issue

  • Clear the area around vents: Keeping furniture, curtains and other things away from the vents in your home. If the air can’t properly circulate in your home, your furnace will have to work overtime to warm the rooms in your house.
  • Clean your ducts regularly: Duct cleaning is essential to allowing the warm air from your furnace to flow freely around your home. If ducts are dirty or have debris in them then airflow is inhibited and your furnace has to work harder to spread the warmth.
  • Air filters need replacing: Clean or replace your air filter. If the air filter in your furnace is dirty then the airflow is restricted and your furnace has to work harder than normal to push air through the filter and then through your home.
  • Regular furnace maintenance: Annual maintenance is one of the best ways to ensure you have an efficient furnace. An experienced and knowledgable furnace repair and furnace maintenance technician will evaluate your furnace and perform a tune-up to ensure that it’s running as efficiently and reliably as possible. This appointment will also ensure that you avoid as many repairs as possible by addressing any concerns early on before they lead to major repairs and in turn expensive repair costs.

Overall, the HVAC industry and furnace production industry has taken steps to improve environmental sustainability. Green HVAC technology is more efficient, will save you money, will last longer and reduce your carbon footprint compared to older furnaces and HVAC systems. If you’re wondering about the Efficiency of Your Furnace or replacing your furnace there’s really no reason not to buy a high-efficiency furnace.

New homeowners don’t always know all the little ways to help a home’s heating and cooling system perform efficiently and last longer. It’s really not that difficult, and we’ve put together a small list of things any homeowner in Toronto and the GTA can do to help get more from their furnace this winter.

7 Non-Technical Ways To Help Your Furnace

Ceiling fans

One of the simplest furnace tips of all would be to make use of your ceiling fan – if you have one. If you don’t, you might want to consider it since they help with circulating the air in your home. This has been a cost-effective way of controlling a home’s temperature for quite some time now.

Keep vents/filters clear

Moving right along, let’s jump into a furnace tip that most people don’t think about – airflow. Keeping vents clear and open is a great way to ensure your furnace doesn’t work too hard to heat your home in the winter. And don’t forget that a clean air filter can work wonders too, as furnaces pull air from your home in order to heat it. No air, and your furnace will be working overtime trying to compensate – which is bad news.

Programmable thermostat

Most homes tend to have this furnace tip in place already. If you don’t, you should put this on the list of things to upgrade. Smart thermostats don’t have to be expensive either, as a basic one can still be programmed to adjust the level of heat in your home when you’re at work or out for the day. This not only helps your furnace, it saves you more each month on energy bills.

Annual Furnace maintenance

Having a qualified professional take a look at your furnace once every year or two is always a good investment. They can usually identify or even deter problems and help your furnace last longer. Yes, some people feel comfortable performing their own maintenance, but we never recommend that without previous training or experience. The last thing you’d want to do is void the warranty or even put yourself in danger to save a few bucks.

Check for air leaks

Drafty windows and doors are a sure way to put pressure on your furnace. Installing weatherstripping around any minor drafts is a great furnace tip to help keep warm air from your home from escaping.

Bake/cook more at home

Ever notice that most people don’t like to cook in the summer? Using the stove or oven can raise the heat indoors, which is a great furnace tip in the winter. Don’t be afraid to cook or bake a bit more often to help warm your home – your furnace will thank you.

Curtains

Keeping curtains closed at night is a great way to help prevent heat from escaping. During the day, keep them open to let light in if you have a lot of natural light of course.

Your energy bill will always increase a little bit in the winter. It’s just a fact of living in Toronto. You spend more time indoors and the lights in your house are on for longer periods because we have less sunlight. You’re also forced to keep your home warm, even when you’re not there in order to keep the pipes from freezing. While your energy bill can increase quicker than you may notice there are a few things you can do to keep it under control.

How Much Does It Cost To Run Appliances?

The operating cost of your appliances isn’t something that you need to be aware of, but it can certainly help you understand why your energy bill costs what it does. this can help you regulate how much you use them or how efficiently you use them throughout the year.

Tumble Dryer – This is one of the most frequently use appliances in any home. We certainly use them much more often throughout the winter because we can’t hang anything outside to dry. Unfortunately, tumble dryers are energy pigs and can really ramp up your energy bill. An average dryer costs about $1 per load to operate.

Using your dryer properly by drying loads rather than single or very few items, and by drying clothes outside when possible can save you up to $130 per year.

Here are some tips to improve your dryer usage:

  • Hang your laundry to dry when possible, even indoors and then use your dryer to finish them off and remove wrinkles on a half cycle.
  • Be sure to always use the spin cycle in your washing machine so as much water and moisture is removed from your clothes as possible prior to throwing them in the dryer.
  • Clean the lint filter. Your dryer will work more efficiently and use less power with a clean lint filter.
  • Dry clothes of similar weights together. Towels and heavy sweatshirts will take longer than t-shirts

Here are some other items around the house that people commonly use, and how much they cost to operate:

  • Electric Heater – An average electric space heater run for five hours in the evening will cost almost $3, which can be about $20 per week and $80 a month. Maybe use a blanket instead of running an electric heater.
  • Kettle – Boiling 2 litres of water in your kettle can cost you about 45 cents. Only boil as much water as you need in order to save money.
  • Light Bulbs – Winter is darker which means the lights get used more. Overall, lighting accounts for about 8% of your energy bill. Switching older incandescent bulbs out for energy saving LEDs can save $20 per light bulb per year.
  • Electric Blanket – These use around 1.5 kWh to operate for 4 hours, which costs around .40 cents.

Save Big On Your Energy Bill With HVAC

One big way to save money is to ensure that all of your appliances are operating efficiently. This includes your furnace, boiler, air conditioner, blower fan, dehumidifier, duct system, ductless air conditioner, heat pump and any other HVAC appliance. When these appliances are properly maintained by a professional they will use less energy to operate throughout the year.

Annual air conditioner maintenance is one of the most important things you can do to ensure your air conditioner is running properly and efficiently. Proper air conditioner maintenance is also one of the best ways to keep your air conditioner running longer, so replacement units are fewer and farther between. It’s a big mistake to forgo air conditioner maintenance, and here are 7 other mistakes you might be making when it comes to home cooling.

Air Conditioner Filters – Part of air conditioner maintenance is changing the filter, but it shouldn’t end there. The air conditioner and HVAC filter should be inspected and possibly changed at least once a month. Changing the air filter is easy and can improve the efficiency of your system immediately.

Programmable Thermostats – A programmable thermostat is one of the best ways to ensure your system is running as efficiently as possible. This reduces the wear and tear on your system and also ensures that you’re not paying high rates on your energy bill when you don’t need to. Smart thermostats make programming even easier as they understand your habits and adjust the temperature accordingly.

Incorrectly Setting A Thermostat – The human body can adapt to changing temperatures quite easily. If you’re setting your thermostat too low during the summer to keep your home and body temperature very low you might be wasting money. Every degree setting lower in the summer can increase your energy bill by up to 3%. Allow your body to adjust to higher temperatures so you can save money in the summer.

Fans – Ceiling fans are a great addition to air conditioning systems. They help circulate air throughout your home, so your air conditioner doesn’t have to work as hard. Ensure that your fan is turning counterclockwise during the summer to assist with airflow.

Poorly Positioned Vents – It’s tough to choose where your vents are located in your home, but it’s important that they aren’t blocked by furniture or curtains. Obstructed vents aren’t able to properly cool your home or circulate the air. This makes your system work harder than it has to, which in turn costs you money.

Empty Rooms – It’s not always the best idea to close vents in your house as it affects the pressure of your home, but if you can put dampers on the pipes leading to empty rooms in your home and close them when they’re not in use you won’t be cooling empty rooms. When doing this it’s important to close the doors to those rooms so cold air is sucked into them.

Window Coverings – Sunlight is wonderful, but it’s also the biggest thing fighting your air conditioner. By coming through the windows and heating the air in your home, sunlight can be making your system work harder to keep your home cool. shades and blinds are the best defense against the sun when it’s shining through your windows.
